How to be a grown up and spend money on boring things

When DC and I first moved into our house, every penny was spent on things to go inside those four walls.

All of our weekends were spent in Ikea / Comet / TK Maxx / Potters Superstore.
All of our time was spent sanding, chopping, fitting, painting, glossing.
All of our money was spent on plasterers, cookers, washing machines and mirrors.
All of our evenings were spent eating microwaved food, on borrowed sofas with no television.

(I'm not complaining. It was fun.)

And when our sofas were finally delivered we flopped down onto them, let out a huge sigh and promised never to re-decorate for the next two hundred and fifty eight years.

That was ten months ago, and now we've finally saved enough money to get our three bedrooms carpeted. But this means ripping out fitted wardrobes that we don't like, more plastering, more ceiling painting, more wall painting, and also shifting all of our settled furniture and belongings out of the bedroom and into that secret storage space under our house (yes, we have nowhere for them to go.)

But carpet shopping was kind of fun. It reminded me of when we first moved in and had all these big decisions to make about the kind of home that we wanted to make for ourselves. We have saved for so long that it felt good to buy lovely things for our house. We felt grown up and overnight became experts on cookers and home furnishings. I also loved that all of a sudden, my mum couldn't tell me to clean my room (although DC quickly took up that role.)

How expensive are carpets?!!! We couldn't believe it. Over £600 for just three bedrooms, and that was the cheapest quote. That could buy us a holiday!!

Decisions, decisions.
