How to get creative

It's amazing what you can do with a vase, gravel, string and a fake flower. I saw a vase in Sainsburys at the weekend - I can't find it online now - and it gave me the inspiration to make my own for less than half the price!

It's the first accessory for my new bedroom, and it's happily sitting in the window sill. I should get creative more often - I love it when a plan works! The whole thing cost me about £6.50, which is a bargain.

How to create a pig sty

...by deciding to get carpets fitted a year after you've moved in. You're all settled, everything is in its place, the furniture took hours to take down / rebuild / carry up the stairs / fit through doors and ahhh relax... for 12 months until deciding to upheave your whole house once more!

This was our lounge...

And it took a while to clear our bedrooms and rip up the cheap laminate flooring...

But then the carpets finally came and we could finally start putting things back to normal.

When we moved in we decided to have the front bedroom but then we changed our mind, so when the carpet fitter left we started on swapping the furniture to set it up in our freshly painted room. I love the end result - our bedroom is now much lighter and I can't wait to furnish it with lots of accessories that make the room feel homely - I never spend any time relaxing or watching tv in our bedroom so hopefully that will change.

Finally our house is back to normal and we can relax - the full weekends of working on it was worth it!

Pre-pay day clothes shopping is asking for trouble

DC and I popped to the shops after visiting my grandparents on Saturday, for him to find something to wear for our night out. It was 4 days before payday (which has still not come around, boo) and I knew already that I had my eye on something in the Topshop sale so I was hoping it'd be there.

I tried on this dress that I've had my eye on for AGES:

And I did love it but I realised I probably wouldn't get much wear out of it (and the fact I had no £) plus as per many complaints on Topshop.com my elephant had disappeared off the front of the dress too.

This was the jacket I have been trying to track down but as you can see the size 10 was way too big and a size 8 is nowhere in sight, it's now also disappeared from the sale section of Topshop.com. I think you can see the look I was trying to go for though...

Then my final option was this Peter Pan floral print top with lace detailing from Miss Selfridge:

This was really flattering and took me about 4.5 second to purchase whoops :)

Pick of the week #16

Following on from last week's beach holiday shop, here's my top pics for the best beach beauty buys.

1. Face sun protection - Rituals £14.00
I find that regular body sun tan lotion is too greasy for my face and I end up getting a breakout while I'm away. I've been using this SPF30 face cream for 3 years now and I love it, plus I get a 30% discount which always helps with the price.

2. Maybelline BB cream - Superdrug £7.99
I LOVE the Universal Glow version of this BB cream. It gives a really good glow and pre-holiday I was worried that it would be too orange for me but whilst I was out there and gradually getting a tan it was the perfect cream for a coverage that wasn't foundation-heavy. I also used it for months afterwards going back to work, so I can't wait to get a good use out of it again.

3. Mark Hill sea salt spray - Boots £5.99
My hair is neither here or there so I like to put a product in it whilst I'm on the beach to stop the frizz and keep the flyaways tame. I can't remember the spray I used last year so I'm going to try this one this year and hopefully it'll keep my hair in good shape.

This is another beach bag essential for me that I've used year on year. I'm a devoted Vaseline addict but it just doesn't do the job in the sun, my lips just burn straight away. This lip balm is cheap and cheerful, smells great and does the job.

5. Moisture Surge - Clinique £32.99
This moisturiser is the best thing since sliced bread. Fact. I use it all throughout winter when my face gets dried out by the cold and wind, but also use it on holiday when I get a heat rash on my cheeks / chin every year without fail. It keeps my skin moisturised and clears it up much faster than anything else.

This week at ww...

Over the past few weeks I haven't particularly been following a weightwatchers plan, I have simply been trying to eat more natural foods. But my Thursday weigh in seems as I don't have to pay as a Gold member is a good way to keep track of my numbers.

I know that I'll eventually come off of the plan all together, I'm just not sure when. I'll definitely go back on the plan after any babies that may come along, and stick to it because I know it works. But I was thinking the other day... When was the last time I ate a chocolate bar and didn't feel guilty about it? That's not a fun life to live!

Review: Coast To Coast

A new Coast to Coast American restaurant and bar opened in Leicester through the Highcross shopping centre on Monday and my friends and I decided to check it out for our monthly meet up. It used to be a Cruise clothing store and it's been converted really nicely, with American booths, a huge long bar and a relaxed atmosphere.

Source: c2crestaurants.com

You can see that a lot of effort has gone into opening week and the staff was super inviting and friendly. We didn't wait very long at all to be greeted and we were shown straight to a table. We went quite early at 5.30pm but thought it would be busy due to Orange Wednesday in the cinema opposite. I'm not sure who we were served by because they don't have name badges but she was really friendly and enthusiastic.

I tweeted yesterday that I was going to visit here tonight and soon after received a voucher code for a free cocktail, which I definitely would have taken up if we all weren't driving.

For drinks I chose homemade pink lemonade and it was AMAZING. It's probably quite bad for you as anything yum is but it was really tasty and it came in a huge glass that lasted me throughout my whole meal. We were also asked whether we wanted a jug of water when we sat down which was a nice touch.

For my main course the pulled pork was off the menu - even though the company on Twitter promised it would be back today - so I couldn't have that wrap so I went for the goats cheese wrap. It comes with homemade coleslaw and you can choose between regular fries or sweet potato fries - what a great idea. I LOVE sweet potato fries. They weren't very warm so it seemed as though they had been sitting for quite a while before they came over to the table but it wasn't bad enough to complain about.

One of my friends went for the Caesar chicken wrap and the other chose the Mediterranean vegetable linguine - which was huge. Everyone was completely full up but of course there is always room for............

 PEANUT BUTTER CHEESECAKE!!!!

We nearly missed the option for this because there's not actually a dessert menu, and we had to ask our server if there was anything else for dessert before she gave us the option for the peanut butter cheesecake and a few other things. Another thing is that without a dessert menu you obviously don't know the price of the items so it may not be good if you're going on a budget.

However, the peanut butter cheesecake was absolutely amazing and completely hit the spot. It came with both cream AND ice cream, and my friend and I completely enjoyed it, with the other ordering the chocolate brownie and it disappearing within around two minutes, which meant it must have been good!

We did have a Highcross staff discount card between us so we got 10% off our bill making it £45.40 for the three of us, saving ourselves £5. I think it was quite reasonable at £15 each for two courses and a drink.

Overall I wasn't crazy about the main course, the plate had grease marks all of the way around the edge but it was tasty and there were a great range of courses. The drink and dessert were absolutely delicious - the dessert spoon perhaps needs to be served with a napkin though as it's the course that most makes a mess! - and I'm already planning on coming back here after the cinema one night for the cheesecake! I'd be happy to go back, maybe not for a special occasion but definitely for a catch up with friends in a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. Definitely a cocktail next time!

I thought the cinema ripped me off by hiking their ticket prices until...

... I saw this face and the world just kind of fell into place.

HELLO.

If I didn't take my Man of the Month poster down because I didn't want my new boss to think I was an unprofessional... well... GIRL, then Henry Cavil would be right up there and I don't think I'd take him down until December.

Maybe March.

The thing is, I don't really like him like this...

...he could keep the costume on though if he wanted.

No, there definitely has to be stubble involved on a dark haired beautiful man such as this one...

...and the curly hair is a bonus.

He is yum! The thought of watching Superman and paying £8.20 for the privilege was much better after this.

Shallow? Me?

My life in pictures #13

This is DC almost falling asleep trying to deflate our friend's air bed on Sunday morning, the morning after quite a few drinks the night before. And this wasn't even the funniest part... it actually deflates electrically by itself with the flick of a switch although our friend happened to keep this small piece of information to herself until the air bed was almost in the bag!

How to make the best fish finger sandwich ever...

...don't make it and go to the pub instead to buy it!

DC and I are lucky in that we have a pub in the village within walking distance, which just happens to serve the best. food. ever. We've never had a bad meal there, the food is always delicious, and I think we've also converted all of our family and friends.

I may have had a bit of a moan to DC at the weekend that we haven't had the chance to do a lot together recently, we are always so busy with family and friends and work and more work and even more work that we couldn't remember the last time we spent an hour together alone that wasn't to do the food shopping.

So on Saturday for lunch DC took me to our pub for lunch to reward ourselves for painting all morning.

And I ordered this.

And it was amazing.

There are no more words.

Late to the party

Ok so I'm only a couple of hundred years behind with this, but I've just joined Pinterest.

I don't even know how to really use it, but I do know that I need inspiration in my life and this is the place to get it. My friend on Saturday night couldn't give it enough credit for all of her upcoming wedding ideas, so I knew I had to check it out (no there is no secret wedding).

I'm pretty sure it will give me some ideas for my home, after all I do have four freshly painted walls upstairs and nothing yet to fill it or hang on the walls. Watch this space!

Pick of the week #15

As I've got summer holiday on the mind lately, this week's Pick of the Week focuses on my favourite place to holiday shop, H&M. I love how pretty and affordable its beach wear and accessories are - perfect to wear every day and cheap enough to even through away if you've worn through them on your week away, which always happens with me with sandals!

1. Leather buckle sandals (currently sold out) £39.99
I'm not surprised these are sold out, I love them and wish I had spotted them earlier! Leather sandals always last forever, and the embossed buckle on the back of these really make them stand out.

2. Crochet cream bag £12.99
This bag is perfect for the beach to keep your valuables in; I always carry a smaller bag around and pop it in my big beach bag to keep it safe.

3. Sunglasses £4.99
I made the mistake one year of taking only my vintage Raybans on holiday, and this left them a bit scratched from all of the moving around; I even left them on the table at dinner once and had to run back heart in throat hoping they were still there! So I learnt my lesson and stocked up on plastic rimmed sunglasses to take to the beach, to keep my favourite sunglasses off of the sand.

4. Straw hat £7.99
I don't like the sun on my face all day every day and find myself covering up in the shade come 1pm - I'm not the kind who can sunbathe all day! So I like to keep a hat on hand to keep myself cool.

I've never bought a swim suit from H&M before and I actually expected them to be cheaper than they are. But I love this bright bikini top and it's a great flattering shape.

Time spent 2:36:44

A good week back on track!

Sunday: 9.13km run
Monday: rest day
Tuesday: 5.56km run
Wednesday: rest day
Thursday: rest day
Friday: rest day
Saturday: 9.10km run

So even though I've been slacking off on my reporting, I have been running promise!!! I wrote about my disappointment in How to get back into running when you've been a lazy slob for 10 days after I had given up on a run and stopped half way through for the first time since I started training all of those weeks ago.

But then I was determined to start afresh this week and I've succeeded ever since. I am now on week 15 and it is less than 2 weeks until race day!!! I can't believe it's coming around so fast.

So last week I realised I have been running less, only 3 times a week, but the distances I've covered have more than made up for that. Because I want to complete my 10k race in 60 minutes, I did a couple of 1 hour runs throughout the week to see how far I could cover during that time. I was hoping to improve each time but as you can see, Saturday was only 0.04km off beating my distance on Sunday! I've been running at quite an easy, good pace and I know I can push myself further but I'm so worried about burning out that I've been running quite slowly and then trying to make up for it in the last 5 minutes!

I'm hoping for a couple more long runs this week to hopefully try and get closer to my race day pace. Fingers crossed!

5 more things I didn't tell you while I was gone...

1. Trev was finally taken for a clean, his first since I bought him six weeks ago... I have to admit it was getting a little shabby with how much I've been driving him around! DC took him for me as an excuse to get out of glossing our skirting boards...

2. It finally came around to my turn to cook for our office's Munch Club. One lady bakes every month so because I was last to move upstairs to the office I had to wait 12 months for my turn! My mum came around the evening before and we spent a good few hours baking. We made date slices, peach patisseries, and cupcakes... they were all yum and went down really well in the office, plus they were all mega easy to make.

3. I started planning my half year conference at work. Other than one mega mishap of changing the date, I really need to crack on as it's on 11 July and I haven't got much planned at the mo. Around 50 of the management team come together every half year for a business review, and it's a great chance for everyone to get on the same wavelength in regards to how the company is doing, and also a nice opportunity for the management team to get together from all across the country and catch up and see each other. I've booked our evening entertainment, which will be a game show style team event with rounds such as Catchphrase, Buzzcocks etc. I'm hoping I pull it all off!

4. In the weeks that I've been MIA, I lose 2lbs at weightwatchers, then put on 0.5, then put on 1.0... so I'm back to where I started. But now that a holiday is hopefully in sight, it's time to get bikini body ready!

5. My sis and I made sausage pasta on my Thursday bake off night and my sister wasn't too impressed with what the skins resembled, so I'll leave you with this image...

My life in pictures #12

This is Joe. We met when we were eight, and he is my oldest and dearest friend. We went to primary school together, secondary school, college... and then he left me to go and study at Manchester Met, and he's never come home! He comes home about four times a year and I've been to visit him a handful of times. He's one of those friends where it doesn't matter if we don't see each other for months, we just pick up where we left off and have lots to talk about.

We've fallen out twice during our 17 year friendship... one when we were drunk and 17 and he broke my camera, and the other time when we were drunk and 17 (I see a pattern emerging here) in an indie club and I told him that I didn't like his girlfriend (I'm too honest, she wasn't good for him). But we made up quickly and other than that he's always looked after me.

I'm lucky to have a friend like him. Everyone should have a Joe in their life!

How to bag a summer holiday package

...for less than £650, without it being a dive.

Wow, I can't believe how expensive holidays are these days! DC and I are really hoping to go away this year, I had my summer hols last year with J but he didn't get a chance to go away. So before we start making plans, we want to get away for a week in the sun for a week of relaxation.

We've always booked last minute. In 2010 we went to Benalmadena, and in 2011 we jetted off to Corfu. Both of them cost around £600 for everything - flights, holiday, and baggage, going self catering. But nowadays it looks like you're getting a cheap holiday... then on the final booking page they add on £140 for suitcases! I don't even think £650 is that cheap, to me it's a lot of money (read: handbags) but I just can't seem to find anywhere.

Well, there are a million zillion "star hotels" courtesy of On The Beach. They really do sell it to you. But then you look at the TripAdvisor reviews and see 'rats' 'burglary' 'rude staff' 'stained mattresses' and more. I don't mind the odd cockroach (my idea of 'not minding' cockroaches is shrieking for five minutes whilst chasing it around the apartment with a tumbler glass for the maids to get rid of later) but rats? Really?

Summer holidays are tricky because late deals used to be really reasonable, but now you don't know whether the price will go down or rocket as the jetting off date gets closer. It doesn't help that as DC's a teacher we can only go away in the half terms or summer holidays, which drives up the price. But Leicester breaks up for the summer hols a week earlier than most of the country, so if we fly on 13 July we can get a bit of a better deal.

At the moment I've found one set of good reviews for a hotel in Los Cristianos, and I know the area is nice because I've been to Playas De Las Americas a few times and the area is amazing. The only bad thing is that the hotel is at the top of a steep hill, but 'Cardiac Hill' in Benalmadena didn't hurt us too much so I think we'll be all right with that - at least it'll burn off some of the yum food and cheap alcohol at the end of the night!

It's a circle - you're stressed so you want to book a holiday, you search for package deals and get even more stressed and then are more in need of a holiday... and so on.

In Corfu we had a really terrible hotel (more like a ground floor shack with a broken door) but we didn't let it bother us, as I think holidays are definitely what you make them.

Hopefully in five weeks I'll be flying off to somewhere hot, sunny and relaxing. But for the minute it is doing.my.head.in. trying to find the perfect location. Get me away!

Pick of the week #13

1. Rimmel BB Cream 9 in 1 Make Up - £4.99 Boots
I found a tester of this in my make up drawer so I must have pulled it out of a magazine at one point. I was surprised that the tester was a 'light' shade as usually

2. Floral Bandeau Playsuit - £25.00 Topshop
The photo of this doesn't do it justice. It looks great and is the perfect look and fabric for a beach holiday. It's one of those playsuits that you can throw on every day on holiday and you'd look great.

3. Knitted mint jumper - £38.00 Topshop
The colour of this jumper in the flesh is gorgeous; perfect for spring and you can wear it with shorts, throw it over a dress, or wear it with jeans. It's versatile and I love it.

4. Garmin Forerunner 10 - £99.00 Tesco
I'm still at the stage where I'm running holding my iPhone (bad I know), so on my wishlist is this pink GPS watch, which will track all of my activity without the heavy load. And even better, if you buy this pink version from Tesco they will donate £5 of every purchase to Breast Cancer Care.

5. Sleeveless smock dress - £25.00 River Island
This dress also looks much better in the flesh. I love the loose fitting smock dresses, but I have to be careful that they don't make me look bigger than I am although I love the fit of this one. I bought it on Friday and it's perfect for the summer weather at the minute.

5 things I didn't tell you while I was gone...

1. After a much moaned about failed purchase and mega long time to put my order through, PLUS a wait much over the standard 30 days, my Zatchel from their half price birthday bonanza has finally arrived. I love it, it's beautiful, and it completely cheered me up arriving at work on a mega stressful day. I have to admit though that it's much more over on the yellow side than I was expecting, as it is classed as cream and looked much different on the website, but it doesn't make me love it any less. It's arrived just in time for summer, and I've used it every day since it arrived. It's perfect.

2. I was officially made a Personal Assistant at work. I was always officially a Directors Secretary and I was never happy with doing the same job as everyone else and being classed differently. So this small change made a massive difference in my confidence. Next stop: payrise! (Kidding, just in case my boss finds my blog).

3. One of my closest friends had a birthday house party and it was one of the best nights ever, nothing like the confidence crisis I had when out back in March. I even saw my old college friend there and we had a good catch up. There's nothing like a good party with good friends, and I prefer it being in a house than in a club, which I'm just not that in to any more.

4. Talking of clubs, DC enjoyed a day in the dog house. He was out in town with friends and asked me to pick him up at 11.45pm, by Whatsapp. Did he respond to my 7 messages asking him where he was and wanted picking up from? No. Did he answer his phone when I called him 5 times? You guessed it. Then what happened? My battery died. So I waited in town for him at the place I messaged him. With no phone. And I waited. And waited. And 45 minutes later, I happened to spot him stumbling down the street with his friend... on his way to another club. Yes, hot water indeed. I even made him watch the Notebook as punishment (he didn't cry. I did.)

5. We decorated our house, which was the main reason for my absence. We re-painted our downstairs bathroom, and ripped the wardrobes out in our spare room. We had a plasterer in to smooth out the walls, before we got to work painting. Our neighbours made it better by shouting up to me from their garden when I was hanging out of my window painting the sill, asking us over for a BBQ. It was yum. This was after we emptied said fitted wardrobes and since then have been dressing ourselves from temporary Argos rails. This part, not so fun.
